Reviewing a manuscript structure
What It Is

The Edit That Shapes the Whole Book

Before worrying about commas, your book needs to work as a whole. Developmental editing looks at the architecture — does the story or argument build, do characters and chapters earn their place, is the pacing right, is anything confusing or missing? You receive an honest, constructive assessment and a practical plan to revise with confidence.

It's the single highest-impact edit for most manuscripts, and the right first step before copy editing and proofreading.

Questions

Developmental Editing FAQ

Is this the same as copy editing?
No. Developmental editing is the big-picture edit (structure, pacing, content); copy editing is the line-level edit (grammar, consistency, style). Developmental editing comes first.
Will you rewrite my book?
No — we guide, we don't rewrite. You receive clear direction and suggestions, and you make the revisions (or we can quote separate editing or ghostwriting if you'd like help).
Do I need it if I've self-edited?
Most authors are too close to their own work to see structural issues. An expert outside read almost always uncovers high-impact improvements.
How long does it take?
Typically 3–6 weeks depending on word count and current schedule. We confirm in the consultation.
